Sharp Corporation announced the launch of its conversational AI character, Poketomo, in Taiwan, marking the first expansion of the product outside of Japan. The launch is scheduled for July 1, with pre-orders beginning on May 20.
Poketomo is designed to provide empathetic companionship, responding to users' emotions such as happiness or loneliness. The Taiwan version will support conversations in Traditional Chinese, maintaining the core features of its Japanese counterpart.
The product includes a palm-sized robot, approximately 12 cm in height and weighing around 194g, which facilitates expressive communication through gestures and a rainbow-colored light. The Poketomo experience is enhanced by a smartphone app that allows for continuous interaction and memory sharing.
Sharp has also established social media channels in Taiwan, including Instagram and Threads, to engage with users through serialized comics and videos demonstrating Poketomo's role in daily life.
Pre-orders for Poketomo are available at retail locations across Taiwan, including mobile device retailers and consumer electronics stores, as well as through various e-commerce platforms. The product's pricing is open, with the smartphone app available for NT$128 per month.
