Hitachi Energy Supports Ulinda Park BESS in Queensland

Hitachi Energy has successfully delivered and is now supporting the Ulinda Park battery energy storage system (BESS) in Queensland, Australia, through the supply of power converters and a new HMAX Energy service agreement.

The 155 megawatt (MW) / 298 megawatt-hour (MWh) project, developed and operated by Akaysha Energy, is designed to enhance grid stability, support renewable generation, and participate in Australia's National Electricity Market (NEM), including Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS).

Located in Queensland's Western Downs region, Ulinda Park operates in one of Australia's most demanding electricity environments. As the energy system becomes more dynamic and decentralized, maintaining availability, fast response, and regulatory compliance throughout the full lifecycle is critical.

Hitachi Energy provided a comprehensive technical solution for Ulinda Park, including power conversion, control technology, factory testing, commissioning, and regulatory integration support necessary for successful entry into the NEM. To sustain performance and reliability, Akaysha Energy entered into a 20-year long-term service agreement with Hitachi Energy.

The service agreement, part of the HMAX Energy suite, incorporates IoT connectivity across assets, enabling Ulinda Park to function as a software-enabled, performance-managed system. This contributes to the stability and reliability of Queensland's electricity system.

Hitachi Energy's service agreements are designed to prevent operational disruptions by combining long-term planning with continuous monitoring, predictive insights, and preventive maintenance, supported by 24/7 remote and on-site expertise. AI-enabled support solutions enhance the ability to predict potential issues before they occur, ensuring reliable market participation and regulatory compliance.

Massimo Danieli, CEO of Grid Automation at Hitachi Energy, highlighted the importance of reliability, predictability, and scale for power conversion solutions as Australia accelerates renewable integration. He emphasized Hitachi Energy's role in ensuring Ulinda Park's assets operate safely and meet market and regulatory demands.

Wolf Mueller, CEO of Service at Hitachi Energy, noted that projects like Ulinda Park demonstrate the powerful combination of technology expertise, digital skills, and long-term service partnerships in supporting customers throughout the lifecycle of their assets.

Feri Hamori, Chief Operating Officer of Akaysha Energy, stated that Ulinda Park is now delivering fast frequency response and energy shifting in the NEM, improving system stability and providing flexibility to respond to market signals.
