Mitsubishi Power, a division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., has secured a contract to supply key boiler components for a significant energy transition project in Saudi Arabia. The project involves converting existing heavy oil-fired boilers at the Jeddah South and Shuqaiq power plants into dual-fuel boilers capable of switching between natural gas and heavy oil.
The contract was signed with Dar Al Balad Contracting and Operations, a local engineering, procurement, and construction company, and Mitsubishi Corporation Machinery, acting as the authorized agent for Mitsubishi Power. The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia's national strategy, “Saudi Vision 2030,” which aims to increase the share of natural gas-fired power generation to over 50% as part of a broader effort to reduce CO2 emissions and transition the nation's energy sources.
The Jeddah South and Shuqaiq power plants, each with a capacity of approximately 2.9 GW, began operations in 2017. Mitsubishi Power, the original equipment manufacturer for the existing boilers, will leverage its technical expertise to support the conversion process, ensuring the long-term stable operation of the plants. The end customer for this project is Saudi Energy.
Makoto Fujita, Senior General Manager of the Steam Power Business Division at MHI, expressed pride in contributing to Saudi Arabia's energy transition and CO2 emissions reduction. He emphasized the importance of the Jeddah South and Shuqaiq power plants in maintaining a stable electricity supply on the country's west coast, where there is strong demand for electricity and a high ratio of heavy oil-fired power generation.
The fuel conversion project is part of a nationwide effort to maintain a stable electricity supply while meeting environmental requirements. Mitsubishi Power aims to promote the adoption of high-performance and reliable technologies, supporting global environmental conservation through the advancement of low-carbon and decarbonized energy solutions.
