Mitsubishi Motors and Highlanders Partner to Develop Humanoid Robots for Manufacturing

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and Highlanders, Inc., a startup from the University of Tokyo, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on developing humanoid robots for manufacturing. This partnership aims to address labor shortages and enhance manufacturing flexibility in Japan.

Under the agreement, Mitsubishi Motors will explore the use of humanoid robots at its manufacturing facilities, starting with its Kyoto Plant. The company plans to gather operational data and expertise in humanoid robotics, while Highlanders will benefit from Mitsubishi's mass-production engineering and quality assurance capabilities.

This collaboration marks the first of its kind between an automotive manufacturer and a humanoid robotics developer, focusing on mass production. Mitsubishi Motors has already invested in Highlanders and intends to make further investments to accelerate the growth of both companies' robotics businesses.

Takao Kato, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors, stated that the partnership offers a valuable opportunity to deepen the company's technological expertise in humanoid robotics, aiming to enhance corporate value and drive growth.

Hiroya Masuoka, CEO of Highlanders, emphasized that the partnership represents a significant step toward mass-producing domestically developed humanoid robots, leveraging Mitsubishi's decades of manufacturing expertise. The deployment of Highlanders' robotics technologies within Mitsubishi's operations is expected to drive technological advancement.

The companies plan to commence production in early 2027, utilizing currently unused buildings at Mitsubishi Motors' Kyoto Plant. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create a society where humans and robots work together seamlessly.
