The Sumida Hokusai Museum Celebrates Decade with Hokusai Exhibition

The Sumida Hokusai Museum in Sumida City, Tokyo, is set to commemorate its 10th anniversary with a special exhibition showcasing the drawing manuals of renowned artist Hokusai. Titled “Open the Drawing Manual—Sketches by Hokusai or Many More,” the exhibition will run from March 17 to May 24, 2026.

The exhibition will feature a variety of woodblock printed manuals, including the widely known Hokusai Manga, or Sketches by Hokusai, which has been influential both in Japan and internationally. The works on display will include manuals created by Hokusai and his students, as well as pieces influenced by these seminal sketches.

The exhibition will be divided into two terms, with the first running from March 17 to April 19 and the second from April 21 to May 24. The exhibits will be hosted in the 3rd floor Exhibition Room at The Sumida Hokusai Museum. The gallery will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, with the last entry at 5:00 p.m., but will be closed on Mondays, with the exception of May 4 and May 7.

Admission to the exhibition is set at ¥1,000 for adults, with discounted rates of ¥700 for high school and university students, as well as visitors aged 65 and over. Middle school students and visitors with disabilities will be charged ¥300, while primary school children and younger can enter free of charge. A valid identification card is required to purchase tickets at a discount rate, and those with a disability certificate may bring one accompanying person at the discounted rate.

Visitors will also have access to other exhibitions on the museum premises, including the Education Room — Discover Hokusai and Exhibition Plus.
