The Sumida Hokusai Museum in Sumida City, Tokyo, will host a special exhibition to commemorate its 10th anniversary from September 15 to November 23, 2026. The exhibition, titled “See THE SUMIDA HOKUSAI MUSEUM’s Best ― The Scenery on Both Banks of the Sumida River Picture Scroll and Other Masterpieces ―”, aims to showcase both renowned and newly acquired works by the famous Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and his disciples.
Since its opening in 2016, located in Hokusai's birthplace, the museum has introduced audiences to a diverse range of works by Hokusai. This anniversary exhibition not only features pieces displayed in past shows but also includes works that have never been exhibited publicly before. The selection is curated by the museum's curators, who will each present one of their personal favorites, offering unique insights into the collection.
The exhibition period is divided into two terms: September 15 to October 18 and October 21 to November 23. The museum will be closed on select Mondays and on October 20 for an exhibit changeover. Located on the third and fourth floors, visiting hours are set from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with the last admission at 5:00 p.m.
Admission fees are structured to be accessible with varied rates, including ¥1,500 for adults and ¥1,000 for senior citizens, high school, and university students. Residents with disabilities and their accompanying persons can enter at discounted rates, and children in primary school and younger can attend for free.
Online tickets, which are recommended to avoid lines, are available for purchase via the museum's website. Additional information on sales dates, group visits, and discounted rates is also accessible online.
The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Sumida City and The Sumida Hokusai Museum, aiming to invite visitors to explore the captivating world of Hokusai's art and make new discoveries during their visit.
