Japan Community Healthcare Organization Osaka Hospital (JCHO Osaka Hospital) has announced a collaboration with Fujitsu Japan Limited and Fortience Consulting Inc. to introduce a generative AI system across its medical operations. The project, which was formalized on February 13, 2026, aims to reform work styles and ensure sustainable hospital management with support from Microsoft Japan Co., Ltd.
The initiative will see Fujitsu Japan providing AI-powered services to assist in the creation of discharge summaries and nursing handovers, with operations scheduled to begin in June 2026. The project will also establish internal guidelines for AI use, develop an information infrastructure, and build operational governance to promote AI integration throughout the hospital.
The collaboration intends to serve as a model for AI adoption in public and general hospitals nationwide, sharing insights with other medical institutions to accelerate AI and digital transformation in healthcare. Dr. Ryuji Hamamoto of the Japanese Association for Medical Artificial Intelligence praised the project for its focus on safety and quality improvement.
JCHO Osaka Hospital has been exploring AI applications since November 2024, initially using it for non-clinical tasks like meeting minutes and chatbot systems. The expansion into clinical domains aims to streamline processes such as discharge summary creation and nursing handovers, affecting approximately 16,000 summaries annually. This is expected to enhance operational efficiency and medical quality.
To ensure safe and secure AI utilization, JCHO Osaka Hospital will develop operational rules for managing data and AI outputs on Microsoft Japan's platform, with an emphasis on security, privacy, and compliance. The hospital will also establish 'DX Ambassadors' to promote AI usage, consisting of doctors, nurses, and administrative staff who will identify challenges and validate use cases.
Fortience Consulting will lead the formulation of a basic policy for AI utilization, developing guidelines for other medical institutions and supporting educational programs to enhance digital literacy. The initiative aims for sustained AI adoption and improved healthcare operations.
JCHO Osaka Hospital plans to expand AI utilization to other public hospitals within the Japan Community Healthcare Organization, supporting electronic medical record data use while ensuring personal information protection. The collaboration with Fujitsu and Fortience is expected to set a precedent for future AI-driven healthcare improvements.
