Atelier Seiran, a textile studio from Tokushima, Japan, will present a talk series at the Palazzo Dona dalle Rose as part of the 61st Venice Biennale's Collateral Events. The series, titled “From Indigo to the World — The Spirit and Creativity of Japanese Culture,” is scheduled for September 22-23, 2026.
The event aims to explore the cultural philosophy behind Atelier Seiran's work, particularly focusing on Japan's relationship with nature and how it influences the nation's sense of beauty and creativity. Founded in 1970 by renowned indigo artist Yoko Hashimoto, Atelier Seiran has long been a pioneer in the indigo dyeing industry. Today, the studio continues under the direction of Hashimoto's daughters, Hatsuko Ukigawa and Kiyoko Hashimoto.
Hatsuko Ukigawa, currently the studio's director, will conduct two sessions during the event, discussing the cultural and artistic contexts of Atelier Seiran's work. The program will also feature “Les Lucioles” (The Fireflies), a collaborative art piece by Ukigawa and Cameroonian designer Serge Mouangue, showcasing the cross-cultural potentials of Japanese indigo craftsmanship.
“Venice has long been a crossroads where East and West meet,” Atelier Seiran said. “Through indigo, we hope to open a new dialogue here — one that shares not just a color, but the culture and spirit behind it.”
The talk series will occur from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM daily at the Palazzo Dona dalle Rose, included within the “Fissures of Light Diaspora: Dissonances in Fa Minor” exhibition. Supported by partners TISSALI Arts & Cultures and expected sponsors like MetaMoJi Corporation, Shoshin Foundation, and ExoEARTH Inc., the event promises a rich exploration of Japan's indigo heritage.
In addition to Ukigawa, the sessions will tentatively feature Chiara Modica Dona dalle Rose from Fondazione Dona dalle Rose as a moderator, with video contributions from Yoko Hashimoto, Kiyoko Hashimoto, and Serge Mouangue.
