Japan Launches First Full-Stack Neutral-Atom Quantum Computer ‘Shunkai’

Japan's Institute for Molecular Science has announced the operational commencement of the country's first full-stack neutral-atom quantum computer, named Shunkai. Developed under the leadership of Professor Kenji Ohmori, this groundbreaking system is anticipated to enhance the global landscape of quantum computing with its novel modality.

Shunkai addresses significant challenges in the field of quantum computing, such as scalability and error correction. The technological innovation utilizes neutral-atom quantum computing, which offers unique features like room-temperature operation and ease of qubit expansion, setting it apart from other modalities.

The system currently operates with approximately 50 qubits, with plans to expand to 500. This marks an essential step in the development process as Shunkai will become partially available for external use, aiding in the advancement of quantum error correction technologies. Collaboration with industry and academia is seen as critical, with partnerships including Hitachi, Ltd. and Infleqtion Inc.

The ambitious project is part of the larger 'Large-scale and high-coherence fault-tolerant quantum computer with dynamical atom arrays' initiative, funded by the Cabinet Office/JST Moonshot Research and Development Program. This venture aligns with Japan's broader goal of realizing a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer.

By 2031, the institute aims to create a large-scale, high-performance system featuring 10,000 qubits, equipped with quantum error correction capabilities. The second stage of development focuses on achieving fault tolerance, integrating control technologies, and ensuring the system supports high-fidelity quantum computations over extended periods.

Professor Ohmori expresses optimism about Shunkai's potential impact across various sectors. The integration of Shunkai with IMS's supercomputer facility is poised to enhance computational capabilities, paving the way for a quantum-GPU hybrid computing environment. The innovation draws its name, Shunkai, from Edo-period astronomer Harumi Shibukawa, symbolizing precision and groundbreaking advancement.
