The Sovereign Effects Partners (SEPs), comprising MBDA UK, MBDA Italia, Mitsubishi Electric, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, have signed a collaboration agreement at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026. The agreement aims to support the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) by advancing joint work on effects optimisation technologies and the digital integration of effector systems.
This collaboration introduces a new operating model where the SEPs work as a unified team across borders to enhance the GCAP platform. The agreement focuses on aligning sovereign approaches to effectors and digital integration instead of joint development of effectors. This strategic move is expected to maintain sovereign capability while ensuring next-generation air combat readiness.
The SEPs are transitioning from national contracting to an international construct, leveraging lessons from past international collaborations and national expertise. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, with its experience in fighter aircraft manufacturing and guided weapons development, serves as a key player in this partnership, contributing to Japan's defense capabilities.
MBDA, a leader in complex weapon systems, brings its extensive collaborative experience from the UK's Team Tempest and Italy's involvement in GCAP. Mitsubishi Electric, known for its defense electronics expertise, plays a critical role in Japan's F-2 and F-X fighter programs and collaborates on GCAP's integrated sensing and communications with Leonardo and ELT Group.
This partnership marks a significant step in the international collaboration for the GCAP, aiming to deliver a best-in-class air combat capability. The SEPs' combined efforts are set to enhance the GCAP platform's effectiveness while maintaining the sovereignty of participating nations.
