Pfizer Japan Inc. and Eisai Co., Ltd. have announced a collaboration to co-promote the oral calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist Nurtec® OD Tablet 75mg in Japan, beginning September 1, 2026. The medication, known generically as rimegepant sulfate hydrate, is designed for both acute treatment and prophylaxis of migraine.
The partnership aims to enhance the dissemination of information regarding the appropriate use of Nurtec in treating migraine, a neurological disorder affecting approximately 8.4% of Japan's adult population. Pfizer will manage the development, manufacturing, distribution, and commercialization of Nurtec, while both companies will provide usage information to medical institutions.
Migraine is a prevalent condition characterized by moderate-to-severe headaches and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. The disorder significantly impacts daily life, with women aged 20-40 being the most affected demographic in Japan.
Through this collaboration, Pfizer and Eisai intend to leverage their expertise and healthcare networks to promote the appropriate use of Nurtec, aiming to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from migraines. The initiative underscores the companies' commitment to addressing unmet medical needs and enhancing patient care in the neurology sector.
