Japanese Firms Collaborate on AI-Driven Video Streaming for Formula Car Race

Nautilus Technologies Inc., Nomura Research Institute, Ltd., Internet Initiative Japan Inc., 1Finity Inc., Fujitsu Limited, Ghelia Inc., and M-TEC Co., Ltd. have announced a joint demonstration with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation to validate a next-generation real-time video streaming system using Local 5G and Physical AI at the “KYOJO CUP” formula car race.

This initiative, part of the “Survey on the Effectiveness Verification of Low-Latency Distributed Processing Technology in Next-Generation Infrastructure” project led by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), aims to deliver immersive live race experiences by integrating 4K video and telemetry data in real-time.

The system will capture video and telemetry data from in-car cameras and telemetry units, process it using AI for editing and information overlay, and deliver exciting footage to spectators. This approach eliminates the need for dedicated studios and personnel, offering a cost-effective video distribution solution for diverse events.

Key to this demonstration is the use of Local 5G and Physical AI, which integrates in-car video and telemetry data with 3D models of Fuji Speedway. The AI determines the most exciting race moments to broadcast, enhancing the spectator experience.

The project aligns with the government's “Watt-Bit Concept,” establishing a Local 5G-enabled streaming system by linking CPU servers at Fuji Speedway with remote GPU servers at power company substations. This configuration aims to optimize energy use and computing power through the strategic integration of electricity grids and telecommunications.

Each participating company plays a specific role, from project management and AI development to infrastructure provision and telemetry equipment supply. The collaboration involves multiple industries, aiming to validate low-latency distributed processing technologies and create new business opportunities.

NEDO's Project Manager Tatsunori Endo highlights the initiative's potential to address societal challenges posed by increased AI adoption and strengthen Japan's industrial competitiveness through innovative technologies.
