Fujitsu Limited has announced the development of an Online Medical Certificate Integration Service, set to transform insurance claim procedures for life and medical insurance in Japan. The service, which facilitates the online completion of these procedures, has been adopted by Aflac Life Insurance Japan Ltd. and The Cancer Institute Hospital of JFCR, with operations commencing at the end of August 2026.
The new service aims to enhance convenience for policyholders and beneficiaries of Aflac Life Insurance Japan by streamlining the insurance claim process. It also seeks to alleviate the workload on medical staff at the Cancer Institute Hospital involved in creating medical certificates. This initiative is part of Fujitsu's broader strategy to expand its Personalized Experience offering under the 'Uvance for Finance' program, which integrates real and digital elements to optimize financial services for individuals.
Traditionally, insurance claims for life and medical insurance have required medical certificates issued by healthcare institutions, a process that has been burdensome due to its reliance on in-person interactions or postal mail. Fujitsu's new service addresses these challenges by enabling the entire process, from requesting insurance benefits to receiving medical certificates, to be completed online, ensuring security and reliability.
During the development phase, Fujitsu, Aflac Life Insurance Japan, and Cancer Institute Hospital conducted a proof-of-concept from June to November 2025. This experiment confirmed significant benefits, including a reduction in the time required to request and issue medical certificates.
The service leverages Fujitsu's expertise in electronic medical record implementation and secure network environments. When a policyholder applies for insurance benefits online, the insurance company assesses the need for a medical certificate and informs the policyholder or beneficiary. If required, the request for a medical certificate can be made online, eliminating the need for a visit to the medical institution's reception desk.
For healthcare institutions, the service includes a medical certificate creation support tool that converts patient data into a format compatible with the insurance company's requirements. This integration helps streamline data entry and reduces processing time. Once completed, the medical certificate is uploaded to the service, allowing both the policyholder and the insurance company to access it online.
Aflac Life Insurance Japan and Cancer Institute Hospital anticipate that this service will significantly enhance convenience for policyholders by eliminating the need for hospital visits and reducing waiting times for insurance claim procedures. It is also expected to improve the efficiency of medical certificate creation for healthcare institutions and lower costs associated with paper-based processes.
Looking ahead, Fujitsu plans to extend this service to approximately 20 life insurance companies and 400 medical institutions by fiscal year 2031. By leveraging insights from practical operations, Fujitsu aims to advance business processes related to medical certificate collaboration, contributing to an environment where medical professionals can focus on their core duties while enhancing convenience for patients and other users of medical institutions.
Fujitsu's initiative is part of a broader effort to support people's lives by providing seamless financial experiences through 'Uvance for Finance,' which aims to enhance financial operations with data and AI.
