NEC Corporation's Face Recognition Walkthrough Gate has been awarded the “Best of the Best” honor at the Red Dot Design Award 2026, recognizing it as a pioneering product in global design standards.
The gate, which has been tested on the Joetsu bullet train in collaboration with East Japan Railway Company and JR East Mechatronics Co., Ltd., utilizes NEC's advanced face recognition technology to provide secure identity verification. This technology enables seamless entry and exit for users without the need for IC cards or other devices.
The Red Dot Design Award, established in Germany in 1955, is one of the largest product design competitions globally, attracting around 20,000 entries annually from over 60 countries. The “Best of the Best” award is a prestigious accolade, bestowed upon approximately 1% of all entries for products that set new benchmarks in design.
NEC's Face Recognition Walkthrough Gate was recognized for enhancing passenger experience through its user-friendly design, which incorporates the world's leading face recognition technology. The gate's low-profile, flat design improves visibility and prioritizes user safety, while its ease of installation allows it to be integrated with existing ticket gate infrastructure efficiently.
Looking forward, NEC aims to continue developing solutions that incorporate advanced technologies to facilitate smooth and efficient access for a wide range of users. The company has consistently ranked first in face recognition accuracy tests conducted by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, underscoring its leadership in this field.
