Hitachi, Ltd. has announced an expansion of its collaboration with OpenAI to accelerate the modernization of mission-critical systems and bolster cybersecurity efforts. The partnership aims to integrate OpenAI's frontier AI technology with Hitachi's domain expertise, enhancing AI transformation for both customers and society.
The collaboration will focus on leveraging OpenAI's AI agent, Codex, to analyze legacy system source codes, establishing an AI-driven modernization approach that ensures safe system migration. This initiative is expected to benefit a variety of industries, with financial institutions being the first to experience these advancements.
In addition to modernization, Hitachi plans to access OpenAI's AI models for cybersecurity through the Trusted Access for Cyber (TAC) initiative. This effort is part of OpenAI's Japan Cyber Action Plan, which seeks to responsibly provide advanced AI capabilities to strengthen cyber resilience in Japan's critical sectors.
Under this framework, Hitachi will explore using these models for legitimate defensive purposes, such as vulnerability identification and remediation, with appropriate safeguards and governance. Hitachi's Cyber Center of Excellence (CoE) will act as the initial testing ground for these efforts, applying insights gained to enhance cybersecurity measures.
Furthermore, Hitachi aims to enhance its Frontier AI Deployment Center's (FDE) capabilities in modernization and cybersecurity. The insights from these initiatives will be integrated into HMAX, Hitachi's next-generation AI solution suite, to maximize value for customers.
Toshiaki Tokunaga, President & CEO of Hitachi, emphasized the importance of modernizing legacy systems and enhancing security as critical management priorities. He expressed pride in working with OpenAI to drive transformation toward reliable social infrastructure.
Tadao Nagasaki, President of OpenAI Japan, highlighted the collaboration as a significant step toward safer and more practical AI use in Japan's critical industries. He reiterated OpenAI's commitment to ensuring AI benefits everyone, particularly in legacy system modernization and defensive cybersecurity.
