Fujitsu Wins Prime Minister’s Prize for Scientific Computing Innovation

Fujitsu has been awarded the Prime Minister's Prize at the 2026 National Commendation for Invention for its groundbreaking technology that enhances the performance of scientific and technical computing. The award was presented by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation (JIII) on May 26, 2026.

The award-winning invention, initially developed by Fujitsu in 2009, significantly improves high-speed and high-precision scientific computing. This technology has been pivotal in the development of supercomputers such as the K computer and Fugaku, created in collaboration with RIKEN, as well as in Arm-based server products.

Mikio Hondou of Fujitsu Limited received the Prime Minister's Prize, while Takahito Tokita, CEO of Fujitsu Limited, was honored with the Distinguished Service Prize for Employment of Invention. This recognition highlights Fujitsu's commitment to advancing scientific computing technology.

The invention notably reduces the number of instructions needed for preprocessing the Taylor series expansion to one-third, using specialized instructions that enhance speed without significantly increasing circuit scale. This results in faster and more accurate calculations, benefiting industries that rely on supercomputing for tasks such as structural analysis, collision analysis, and fluid analysis simulations.

Fujitsu's technology is now a standard feature in the instruction set architecture designed by Arm, a leading compute platform company. Its integration into Arm-based server products has had a substantial international impact. The technology is also part of Fujitsu's next-generation processor, FUJITSU-MONAKA, expected to launch in 2027, and is planned for inclusion in the upcoming CPU, FUJITSU-MONAKA-X, which will power the new flagship system, FugakuNEXT.

This innovation is aligned with Fujitsu's commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to build a more sustainable world through technological advancement. Fujitsu continues to lead in digital services, reporting consolidated revenues of 3.5 trillion yen for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.
