Akasaka Heating & Cooling Supply Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of TBS Group, has commenced full-scale operations of its hydrogen heat source facility in Tokyo's Akasaka 5-chome district. This marks the first instance of a private heat supply operator in Tokyo utilizing green hydrogen for commercial purposes, integrating it into power generation and heat supply systems.
The facility, which began operations in May 2026, uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity without emitting CO₂, and hydrogen-co-fired boilers to produce thermal energy. The initiative is part of a broader effort to decarbonize urban infrastructure and promote the use of green hydrogen as a next-generation energy source.
Ryujiro Abe, President & CEO of TBS Holdings, emphasized the significance of this development for urban decarbonization and expressed gratitude for the support received. He stated that the company aims to continue accumulating knowledge to ensure safety and stability while advancing its GX initiatives.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike highlighted hydrogen's role in addressing energy supply stability and decarbonization. She noted that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government supports the facility's introduction as part of its commitment to realizing a hydrogen society under the concepts of 'produce,' 'transport,' and 'use.'
The facility utilizes hydrogen storage alloy for safe, low-pressure hydrogen storage. It sources green hydrogen from Yamanashi Prefecture, with support from a Tokyo Metropolitan Government grant. The hydrogen is used in combination with city gas in boilers, reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 21% at maximum hydrogen co-firing ratios.
Morimasa Takagi, President of Akanetsu, expressed his enthusiasm for the milestone and shared his vision of expanding hydrogen utilization in Tokyo, including the potential development of hydrogen pipelines in the Akasaka area.
