Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced that its Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model secured the top position in domestic sales within Japan's PHEV category for fiscal year 2025. The company reported sales of 7,794 units, marking the second consecutive year the Outlander PHEV has led the category.
Since its introduction in 2013, the Outlander PHEV has been a significant player in the electrified SUV segment. Mitsubishi Motors has consistently expanded its electrification strategy, beginning with the launch of the i-MiEV in 2009 and adding the Eclipse Cross PHEV to its lineup in 2020.
The Outlander PHEV has also achieved notable success in international markets, ranking No. 1 in the PHEV category in Canada for three consecutive years. By March 2025, cumulative sales in Japan surpassed 100,000 units, underscoring its strong market presence.
Mitsubishi Motors continues to promote a strategic approach to electrification, suggesting battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for kei-cars and compact cars, while positioning PHEVs as optimal for SUVs and mid-size to larger vehicles. This strategy is tailored to regional characteristics and varying usage environments.
The second-generation Outlander PHEV, redesigned in 2021, showcases Mitsubishi's advancements in electrification and all-wheel control technologies. The model was updated in October 2024 with an enhanced drive battery, improved acceleration, and refined interior and exterior design. The update also introduced an audio system developed with Yamaha Corporation as standard across all grades, further enhancing the vehicle's appeal.
