Crystal Mover Services, Inc. (CMSI), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, has secured a contract with the City of Atlanta's Department of Aviation to renovate and upgrade the Automated People Mover (APM) system at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The contract spans a decade, from March 2026 to March 2036.
The agreement involves a comprehensive renewal of the APM system, known as the ATL SkyTrain, including updates to the signal system, additional vehicles, and the replacement of existing ones. This system, which connects the main passenger terminal with the rental car center over a 2.2-kilometer elevated double-tracked guideway, is a critical component of the airport's infrastructure.
Since its commercial debut in December 2009, CMSI has provided round-the-clock operations and maintenance services for the APM, ensuring its safety and reliability. In December 2024, CMSI extended its operations and maintenance contract for five years, reinforcing its commitment to stable APM operations at the world's busiest airport.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group's technical expertise in the design, manufacturing, and construction of APM systems was a key factor in securing the contract. The company aims to provide systems that offer economic efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions, contributing to a carbon-neutral future.
CMSI has been instrumental in the operation of APM systems at several major U.S. airports, including those in Miami, Washington Dulles, Orlando, and Tampa, alongside Atlanta. The company's efforts have been pivotal in maintaining the safe and stable operation of these transportation systems.
