Mazda and Nippon Express Launch Biodiesel Fuel Trial for Vehicle Transport

Mazda Motor Corporation and Nippon Express Co., Ltd. have initiated a demonstration trial using biodiesel fuel for vehicle transport trailers, aiming to advance carbon neutrality by 2050. The trial, which began in May 2026, will assess the viability of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as an alternative fuel in logistics operations.

The collaboration is part of Mazda's strategy to achieve carbon neutrality across its supply chain, while Nippon Express aims to contribute to a carbon-neutral society. The trial runs between Mazda's Hofu plant and the Nakanoseki vehicle yard, covering a 12 km round trip, and will continue through the end of fiscal year 2026.

The initiative will evaluate fuel efficiency, performance, and operational challenges associated with using HVO, with the goal of accumulating insights for future expansion. The biodiesel fuel is supplied by NX Shoji Co., Ltd., and the trailers will operate under conditions similar to conventional diesel fuel, with support from Isuzu Motors Limited.

Looking ahead, Mazda plans to collaborate with logistics companies, vehicle manufacturers, fuel suppliers, and local businesses to expand demand and enhance infrastructure for long-term HVO use. This effort aligns with Mazda's broader roadmap for achieving carbon neutrality.

Kazuhiko Sumi, Mazda's Chief Supply Chain Officer, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Nippon Express in promoting the practical application of HVO. Osamu Sasaki of Nippon Express highlighted the company's role in evaluating the impact of fuel switching on transport quality and operations.

Both companies aim to expand their network of partners to further decarbonize the supply chain, contributing to sustainable logistics solutions.
