Sharp and SES Partner to Explore Satellite Communication Services in Japan

Sharp Corporation has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with SES, a major global satellite operator and space solutions provider, to explore satellite communication services in Japan. The collaboration focuses on deploying SES's Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite communication service, O3b mPOWER, in the region.

SES's O3b mPOWER network offers high-throughput, low-latency, and secure connectivity, with the ability to dynamically allocate capacity to mission-critical applications. Sharp is developing flat-panel satellite communication user terminals compatible with this network, leveraging its expertise in communication technologies and compact design.

The partnership will target industrial use cases in areas where terrestrial networks are unreliable or unavailable, such as maritime and mountainous regions. Potential applications include enabling connectivity for heavy machinery in remote locations and managing autonomous vehicle operations.

Jean-Philippe Gillet, President of Fixed Vertical at SES, emphasized Japan's role as an innovation market with growing demand for connectivity beyond terrestrial networks. He expressed commitment to developing services and technologies needed to support mobility and industrial segments in Japan.

Shigeru Kobayashi, Executive Officer and Co-COO at Sharp, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in building next-generation communication environments. By integrating SES's satellite infrastructure with Sharp's user terminals, the initiative aims to create reliable communication solutions for various applications.
