NEC Completes East Micronesia Cable System, Enhancing Pacific Connectivity

NEC Corporation has finalized the construction of the East Micronesia Cable System (EMCS), a submarine cable network connecting three Pacific island nations. This new infrastructure aims to significantly improve internet connectivity and support economic and social development in the region.

The EMCS, spanning approximately 2,250 kilometers, links the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, and Nauru. The cable connects Tarawa Island in Kiribati to Nauru Island, and then via Kosrae in the Federated States of Micronesia to Pohnpei. This development marks the first optical submarine cable connection for Kosrae, Tarawa, and Nauru, transitioning from previously limited satellite communications.

The project received support from the governments of Australia, Japan, and the United States, with grant funding from these nations. The EMCS is expected to provide high-speed, high-quality, and reliable internet communications, enhancing user experiences for online systems such as video calls and electronic payments.

Gordon Segal, CEO of FSM Telecommunications Cable Corporation and Chairman of the EMCS Management Committee, expressed delight in achieving digital connectivity for all four states of the Federated States of Micronesia. He emphasized the infrastructure's role in advancing regional digitalization and improving access to information and services.

Bwanouia Aberaam, Officer in charge of Bwebweriki Net Limited, highlighted the completion of resilient communications infrastructure in Kiribati, expressing gratitude to the collaborating governments and NEC for their support. The infrastructure is expected to bolster the digitalization of the regional economy.

Zikki Eoe, Chairlady of Cenpac Corporation, noted that this project is Nauru's first undersea cable, which is anticipated to accelerate the country's economic development and digitalization. She acknowledged the collaboration with Australia, Japan, the United States, and regional partners.

Tomonori Uematsu, Managing Director of NEC's Submarine Network Division, expressed satisfaction with the project's completion, emphasizing NEC's role in strengthening the region's communications environment. He acknowledged the cooperation of all parties involved in the project.

NEC, a leading submarine cable vendor with over 60 years of experience, has a significant presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The company provides comprehensive services, including the manufacturing of optical submarine cables and repeaters, marine surveys, route design, and installation.
