The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) and NEC Corporation have entered into a strategic collaboration to establish the NEC-UTokyo Lab, aiming to promote a society where artificial intelligence (AI) and humans can thrive together. This initiative, part of the 'Future Synergy with AI: Toward Trustworthy Social Implementation' program, seeks to address the ethical, legal, and social challenges of AI integration.
The collaboration will focus on three core initiatives: engaging diverse stakeholders to explore AI-related issues, advancing AI's societal implementation through collaborative programs, and fostering talent development. Both parties aim to create a framework that extends beyond technological advancements to include legal reforms and the establishment of ethical norms.
The NEC-UTokyo Lab will serve as a platform for leaders and experts to identify challenges and propose solutions for AI coexistence. By integrating UTokyo's advanced knowledge with NEC's technological capabilities, the lab will develop visions for the future and promote research and talent development.
The Social Collaboration Program within the lab will work on designing systems where AI and humans coexist, addressing the merging boundaries between digital and physical spaces. NEC's 'automated negotiation AI' technology is highlighted as a key component in this effort, facilitating consensus-building among AI agents.
Furthermore, the partnership aims to cultivate the next generation of leaders for an AI-native society through initiatives like long-term internships and educational programs at the UTokyo College of Design. This effort will involve personnel exchanges and collaborative research between UTokyo and NEC.
Leaders from both organizations expressed their commitment to advancing AI implementation and establishing Japan's industrial competitiveness. They emphasized the importance of reliable societal implementation of AI technologies to foster a sustainable and prosperous future.
