BEPPU PROJECT Enhances City’s Artistic Appeal with New Art Installation

The BEPPU PROJECT, a nonprofit organization in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, has unveiled a new art installation titled “space II” by the art team “me” as part of the ALTERNATIVE-STATE art initiative. This art project, which began in 2022, aims to reinforce Beppu's brand loyalty by merging its renowned hot springs with compelling art experiences.

Beppu is globally recognized for its abundant hot springs, offering visitors a unique cultural experience characterized by the mystical steam emanating from the earth. The city is increasingly gaining recognition as an art hub, with local and international art initiatives capturing attention. This fusion of natural beauty and artistic attractions positions Beppu as a distinct travel destination.

The ALTERNATIVE-STATE project, described as “A gateway to a world regenerated into an alternative state,” focuses on community building through art. By 2026, it comprises eight permanent pieces created by a diverse range of artists from Japan and beyond. An innovative feature of this initiative includes audio works that are exclusively accessible on-site, encouraging a deeper, multi-dimensional engagement with the art.

The newly debuted artwork, “space II,” invites viewers into an unexpectedly transformative space. Conceived as a sudden opening in a typical house leading to a stone cave, it challenges onlookers to confront the world beyond their familiar perceptions.

Beppu continues to expand its reputation as a city of artistic significance, with various art locations scattered throughout. Notably, it hosts the annual Art Fair Beppu, which showcases emerging artists, and Beppu Art Month, a citywide cultural festival.
