ROHM Co., Ltd. announced the development of a second-generation terahertz wave oscillation device using resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs). This new device, offered through the RTD-EVK-G2 Terahertz Wave Device Evaluation Kit, seeks to facilitate access to terahertz wave evaluation for companies and research institutions.
The evaluation kit, containing a sample device, cable, and evaluation board, allows for exploration of terahertz wave oscillation and detection within a compact development environment. Terahertz waves, positioned between radio waves and light on the electromagnetic spectrum, provide unique capabilities for non-destructive testing and high-resolution radar sensing due to their distinct absorption characteristics for various materials.
Traditionally, terahertz systems have been costly and required large equipment, hindering market entry for new companies and limiting commercialization efforts. However, ROHM's commitment to ongoing research since the late 2000s has resulted in the significant downsizing and cost reduction of their first-generation products released in 2024. The latest device maintains the compact size of its predecessor at 0.5 x 0.5mm and achieves quadrupled output power up to 40 microwatts.
This enhanced signal quality aims to improve the detectability of terahertz waves, making the device apt for sensing and imaging applications that demand high signal fidelity. Housed in a 4.0 x 4.3mm PLCC package, the device occupies the smallest footprint in the industry, according to ROHM's study.
The RTD-based approach is noted for generating less heat and consuming lower power compared to other terahertz generation methodologies, thus alleviating the application development burden for both companies and research institutions.
