Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Expands CO2 Capture System Capacity

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) is expanding its CO2MPACT™ series with a new model that significantly increases carbon capture capacity. The new model can capture up to 450,000 tons of CO2 per year, a substantial increase from the previous models' 70,000 tons.

The new system maintains the mass-produced full-module concept of the CO2MPACT™ Full-Module, allowing for a standardized design that can handle various flue gas sources and pre-defined project conditions such as construction period, cost, and equipment layout. The module ratio has been increased to over 90%, enhancing on-site efficiency and reducing workload, which traditionally accounts for a significant portion of plant construction.

This improvement allows the new model to shorten delivery times by approximately six to twelve months compared to conventional construction methods. The module's design enables delivery via trailer on public roads and by train, broadening the range of customer needs it can meet.

MHI Group plans to showcase this new model at the CCUS EXPO from September 9 to 11 at Makuhari Messe, Chiba. The company will introduce the new CO2MPACT™ lineup and its track record in CO2 capture technology. On September 10, Tatsuto Nagayasu, Head of CCUS, Plants & Infrastructure Systems, will deliver a keynote speech titled “Establishment of CCUS Value Chain by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.”

Since 1990, MHI Group has been developing carbon capture technologies in collaboration with Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. As of August 2026, the company has delivered 18 plants using these processes, with two additional plants under construction. The company's Advanced KM CDR Process™ offers superior regeneration efficiency and lower deterioration, providing excellent energy-saving performance and reducing operation costs.
