Fujitsu, Monash University, and CSIRO Collaborate on Quantum Computing Advancement

Australian researchers and students are set to benefit from a new collaboration between Fujitsu, Monash University, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) focused on advancing quantum computing technology. This partnership aims to accelerate the development of practical quantum applications, bolster Australia's quantum capabilities, and prepare a skilled workforce for the emerging quantum economy.

The collaboration aligns with the recent Memorandum of Cooperation between Australia and Japan on quantum science and technology, highlighting the strategic importance of quantum technologies to both nations. Quantum computing holds the potential to address some of the world's most complex challenges by enabling faster and more powerful analysis than conventional computing, with future applications in cybersecurity, healthcare, decarbonization, and climate science.

Under the agreement, researchers and students from Monash University and CSIRO will gain access to Fujitsu's quantum systems and simulators in Japan. This access will support research in advanced computing, quantum software, and emerging quantum applications. The organizations are also exploring the establishment of a shared quantum research and education facility at Monash University's Faculty of Information Technology, fostering collaborative research, training, and industry engagement.

Peter Grassi, CEO of Fujitsu in Oceania, emphasized the partnership's potential to connect the quantum ecosystems of Australia and Japan. He stated, “By bringing together Fujitsu's leading quantum technologies, Monash University's research excellence, and CSIRO's applied science expertise, we're creating new opportunities to accelerate innovation, develop future talent, and translate quantum breakthroughs into real-world outcomes.”

Dr. Katja Digweed, CSIRO Technology Director, noted the collaboration's role in accelerating the development of advanced quantum computing technologies in Australia. “Connecting deep scientific capability with the right software and algorithms can bring quantum computing closer to practical use in areas like cybersecurity, health, and climate science,” she said.

Professor Robyn Ward, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) at Monash University, highlighted the initiative's potential to translate quantum research into societal benefits. “Universities have a responsibility not only to create new knowledge but to ensure it reaches the people and communities who stand to benefit from it,” she said.

The collaboration will focus on three key priorities: developing practical quantum applications, building Australia's future quantum workforce, and strengthening the country's quantum research capability. These efforts are expected to facilitate research into quantum optimization, machine learning, and advanced simulation technologies, as well as provide students with hands-on experience through teaching initiatives and industry-connected learning opportunities.
