DENSO Launches Digital Product Passport for Battery Compliance in Europe

DENSO CORPORATION has introduced the DENSO Digital Product Passport Solution for Battery, a service designed to assist automakers, battery manufacturers, and other businesses in adhering to the European Battery Regulation while improving battery traceability.

The service comes as Europe moves towards a circular economy, emphasizing the reuse of resources to enhance sustainability. Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are being introduced in Europe to digitally manage and trace product information, with the battery passport set to become mandatory from February 2027 under the European Battery Regulation. This regulation applies to electric vehicle batteries, light means of transport batteries, industrial batteries, and other battery products.

Based on a data model developed by the Battery Pass-Ready consortium in Europe, DENSO's service generates battery passports for individual battery products. It allows businesses to efficiently collect battery-related information from their systems and suppliers, while end users can access this information by scanning QR codes on products.

The service includes access control functionality, enabling information visibility to be managed according to the user type, such as consumers and economic operators. This ensures regulatory compliance and secure data management while respecting data sovereignty principles.

DENSO's service leverages blockchain technologies to manage records in a chained structure, enhancing data reliability and resistance to tampering. This feature is crucial for ensuring the integrity of data required for battery passports.

Looking forward, DENSO plans to expand the service beyond battery passports to support other DPPs required under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). The service's multi-connectable architecture allows it to interface with multiple data platforms, enabling expansion to additional product categories beyond batteries.

DENSO aims to support regulatory compliance globally, helping customers, including automakers, create value through resource circulation and contributing to a more sustainable society.
