Nuvoton Technology Japan to Begin Mass Production of New Battery-Monitoring ICs in 2026

Nuvoton Technology Corporation Japan has announced it will commence mass production of its KA49703A and KA49713A battery-monitoring integrated circuits (BMICs) in September 2026. The new ICs are designed for battery backup units (BBUs) used in AI servers, ensuring reliable and efficient power systems for continuous operation.

Leveraging automotive-grade daisy-chain communication technology, these BMICs support high-voltage BBU applications ranging from 400V to 800V. The method allows for systems connecting up to 55 devices in series while minimizing wiring needs and maintaining robust communication in high-voltage environments. This design reduces the requirement for additional microcontroller units (MCUs) and isolation components, aiding system design simplification and improving reliability.

The compact QFP-48 package, measuring 7 mm by 7 mm, helps in addressing space constraints in AI server BBUs. Additionally, the ICs offer voltage measurement accuracy of plus or minus 2.9 millivolts, enhancing monitoring performance and safety in next-generation power systems.

The KA49713A BMIC includes a specialized transportation and storage mode that reduces shutdown current to less than 0.1 microampere. This feature minimizes battery depletion during transportation and storage of AI-server BBUs and large-scale energy storage system installations, which often contain numerous lithium-ion cells. The reduced power consumption significantly extends storage periods, lowers recharge needs, and contributes to decreased operating costs.

With samples already available, Nuvoton Technology Corporation Japan aims to further advance its battery-monitoring technology to support a sustainable and highly reliable energy future. The company’s efforts underscore its commitment to enhancing power system architectures for AI server applications.
