JCB Co., Ltd., Resona Holdings, Inc., and Odawara Auto-Machine MFG. Co., Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop Ultra-Wideband (UWB) wireless payment solutions for public bus services. This partnership aims to implement hands-free payment systems, addressing technological challenges in open-boarding public transportation.
Building on a prior agreement between JCB and Resona, the inclusion of Odawara, a leader in fare collection equipment, is expected to accelerate the adoption of UWB technology in the public transport sector. UWB, known for high-speed data transmission and precise positioning, enables seamless transactions without the need for physical interaction with payment devices.
The initiative comes at a critical time for Japan's bus industry, which faces driver shortages and an aging workforce. Current payment methods often slow down operations, particularly during peak hours. By eliminating the need for manual fare handling, the new system is expected to reduce driver workload and improve punctuality.
Technical trials and proof of concept are set to begin in fiscal year 2026, with small-scale commercial rollouts planned for 2027. A full-scale deployment is targeted for 2028. The project aims to leverage UWB's precise location data to optimize bus scheduling and improve operational efficiency.
For passengers, the technology promises a completely hands-free experience, along with personalized mobility services such as real-time location-based offers and transit guidance. For bus operators, it offers the potential for data-driven operations and enhanced safety.
Odawara has joined the FiRa Consortium to promote global standardization of UWB technology in transit payments. The consortium focuses on developing technical specifications and advocating for regulations to enable precise location awareness through UWB.
Looking beyond public transportation, JCB, Resona, and Odawara plan to expand the UWB payment ecosystem into smart retail, Mobility as a Service (MaaS), and smart city infrastructure.
