Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Secures Order for Ammonia Fuel System

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, has received an order from Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine Co., Ltd. for its MAmmoSS® ammonia fuel handling system. The order is part of efforts to align with global decarbonization goals in the shipping industry.

The MAmmoSS® system is designed to be compatible with ammonia marine engines from major licensors Everllence SE and WinGD. It will be delivered to Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine's facility for shop testing of both licensors' engines. The system includes an Ammonia Fuel Supply System and an Ammonia Gas Abatement System, along with control equipment.

As the International Maritime Organization's Marine Environment Protection Committee continues to push for reduced greenhouse gas emissions, ammonia has emerged as a potential next-generation marine fuel due to its lack of CO2 emissions when burned. However, its toxicity necessitates effective handling technology, which is expected to increase demand for systems like MAmmoSS®.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding plans to continue developing safe and reliable ammonia-fueled vessel products to support market expansion and enhance functionality to meet diverse customer needs.
