JCB has announced the introduction of its contactless payment system on the Metro de Madrid, allowing passengers to access the metro network with a simple tap of their JCB Cards or mobile devices. This new feature, available from June 2026, aims to streamline passenger flow and reduce waiting times, particularly during peak hours.
The rollout covers all 303 stations of the Metro de Madrid and is part of the operator's modernization efforts to enhance overall accessibility. The system utilizes upgraded gate infrastructure equipped with EMV-enabled readers, facilitating secure transactions with international payment cards and mobile devices.
This development enhances accessibility for international travelers, including JCB cardmembers visiting Madrid, by eliminating the need to purchase tickets in advance. It aligns with the global trend of adopting contactless transit payments in major cities, supporting JCB's expansion in Europe and commitment to improving payment convenience for its 181 million cardmembers worldwide.
Ray Shinzawa, Managing Director of JCB Europe, stated that enabling JCB Contactless on the Metro de Madrid represents a significant step in expanding everyday acceptance for cardmembers across Europe. He emphasized the importance of public transportation as a key touchpoint for international travelers, noting that the new system makes the metro network more accessible and efficient during busy periods.
As more cities adopt contactless transit solutions, JCB plans to continue strengthening its acceptance network to deliver seamless and convenient payment experiences globally.
