Japantastics Launches Sato Mokko’s Traditional Woodworking Globally

Japantastics, Inc. has announced the international debut of Sato Mokko, a traditional Japanese woodworking atelier, expanding its reach to global audiences. The Tokyo-based company aims to introduce the essence of Japanese craftsmanship across Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Asia.

At the center of Sato Mokko is Keiichiro Sato, a third-generation master craftsman from Tsuru City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Known for his innovative approach to traditional Japanese furniture, Sato has garnered numerous accolades in contemporary art exhibitions, solidifying his reputation in modern Japanese craftsmanship.

Founded in 1934, Sato Mokko carries nearly a century of heritage, blending tradition with artistry. The atelier faced significant challenges in recent years, including the loss of its entire body of work, archives, tools, and materials due to two fires. Additionally, a decline in demand from traditional clients such as shrines and temples prompted a shift in focus.

In response, Sato Mokko introduced the “Tamatebako” collection, which reimagines traditional Japanese craftsmanship for contemporary living. Each piece is crafted to bring the cultural depth of artisanal woodwork into everyday life, using rare materials like zelkova and kurogaki.

Japantastics plays a crucial role in this global expansion, serving as a bridge between master artisans and international markets. The company leverages its expertise in cross-border branding, curation, and distribution to ensure the legacy of Sato Mokko thrives worldwide.

Keiichiro Sato emphasized his commitment to presenting refined works globally, utilizing enduring techniques passed down through generations. The collaboration with Japantastics aims to offer discerning audiences not just furniture, but enduring works of art shaped by time and tradition.
