Hitachi Energy Unveils Zero-Emission Hybrid Generator for Off-Grid Applications

Hitachi Energy has launched HyFlex Compact, a hybrid generator designed to deliver zero-emission electricity for temporary and off-grid applications. The system integrates hydrogen fuel cells with high-performance batteries, offering a clean alternative to traditional diesel generators.

As global electricity demand rises, industries are increasingly seeking flexible power solutions capable of operating in locations with limited or unavailable grid connections. HyFlex Compact addresses this need by providing a reliable power source that can function in both standalone and grid-connected environments.

HyFlex Compact combines hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, power electronics, and cooling systems within a portable enclosure, all managed by an optimized control system. The generator converts hydrogen into electricity, producing power, heat, and water without harmful emissions. With optional AC and DC input modules, it can operate as a mobile microgrid, connecting multiple energy assets to ensure stable AC power.

Marco Berardi, Head of Grid & Power Quality Solutions and Service at Hitachi Energy, highlighted the system's role in supporting the evolving energy landscape. “The energy system is being asked to deliver more electricity, with lower emissions and higher resilience,” he said. “HyFlex Compact brings together different technologies through system integration expertise to support a secure electricity supply.”

The generator is suited for diverse applications, including construction sites, events, electric vehicle charging, mining, and remote industrial sites. It builds on Hitachi Energy's previous HyFlex developments, which explored hydrogen-to-power applications and integration of fuel cells in real-world environments.

Hitachi Energy's recent investments in power electronics, such as the new Grid & Power Quality Solutions and Service Test Center in Sweden and a Power Electronics Center of Competence in the United States, underscore its commitment to advancing low-emission power solutions.

HyFlex Compact's introduction marks a significant step in the company's ongoing efforts to provide sustainable and resilient energy systems, supporting industries in their transition to lower emission power sources.
