Fujitsu and IBM Japan Collaborate on Business System Modernization

Fujitsu Limited and IBM Japan, Ltd. have announced plans to accelerate their collaboration in business system modernization to advance enterprise digital transformation and address challenges with legacy systems. This initiative builds on their partnership established in September 2025.

The collaboration focuses on rewriting and refactoring legacy systems, specifically converting COBOL programs on Fujitsu mainframes and UNIX servers into Java. Fujitsu's modernization solution, Fujitsu PROGRESSION, will be used to automatically convert source code, while IBM's AI-powered platform, IBM Bob, will assist in code correction and refactoring.

This modernization effort is crucial for enterprises that rely on COBOL applications, which embody years of business processes and expertise. Fujitsu's roadmap for ending sales and maintenance of mainframes and UNIX servers has made migration to next-generation platforms an urgent task for enterprises.

By integrating their technologies and expertise, Fujitsu and IBM Japan aim to deliver innovative modernization solutions. These services will be tailored to each customer's business characteristics, system requirements, and architecture, supporting digital transformation on hybrid-cloud environments.

The companies plan to expand their modernization initiatives, with IBM Japan serving as the primary provider of the solution and Fujitsu offering technical support. This collaboration is expected to enhance system maintainability and scalability, accommodating future changes and feature additions.

Fujitsu and IBM Japan will continue to integrate and deepen their solutions and expertise in AI utilization to accelerate the modernization of legacy systems in Japan. The companies aim to build trust in Japanese society and promote the evolution of system foundations that support sustainable development.
