Hitachi Energy and Volvo CE Partner for Zero-Emission Construction Sites

Hitachi Energy and Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing end-to-end solutions for zero-emission construction sites. This partnership aims to integrate electric construction equipment with clean power supply and energy management systems to address decarbonization challenges in the construction industry.

The collaboration responds to increasing customer and investor demand for lower-emission construction operations, alongside regulatory requirements for emissions and environmental performance. The transition from individual electric machines to fully zero-emission construction sites necessitates coordinated solutions and effective integration across equipment, power infrastructure, and energy management systems.

Under the agreement, Volvo CE and Hitachi Energy will work on a non-exclusive basis to explore technical and commercial concepts supporting zero-emission construction and manufacturing operations. The focus will be on system integration and site-level operational execution, including joint efforts on business models, market approaches, and aftermarket support.

Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE, emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in accelerating the transition to zero-emission construction. Niklas Persson, CEO of Grid Integration at Hitachi Energy, highlighted electrification as a key factor in decarbonizing hard-to-abate environments like construction sites.

The initial focus of the partnership is on business and market strategies, emphasizing practical, plug-and-play solutions to simplify the transition to zero-emission construction sites. The agreement also lays the groundwork for deeper technical collaboration, potentially exploring connected machines, digital integration, and expanded service offerings.

Volvo CE has been a leader in the industry's move toward electrification and digitalization, while Hitachi Energy brings expertise in power systems and energy management. Together, they aim to provide comprehensive solutions to help customers navigate and accelerate the transition to zero-emission construction.
