Fujitsu and IBM Japan Collaborate on Healthcare Cloud Platform

Fujitsu Limited and IBM Japan, Ltd. have formalized a collaboration to enhance healthcare data integration and utilization in Japan, the companies announced. This partnership aims to develop a sovereign cloud platform for medical use, building on initial considerations announced in September 2025.

The collaboration will focus on integrating electronic health record solutions on Fujitsu's sovereign cloud platform, which will enable data sharing across multiple medical institutions. This initiative addresses the growing medical demand in Japan due to an aging population and the increasing complexity of the healthcare system.

Medical expenses in Japan have surpassed 48 trillion yen annually, exacerbating challenges such as sustainability of social security funding and a decline in medical personnel. The collaboration between Fujitsu and IBM Japan seeks to alleviate these issues by streamlining administrative tasks for healthcare professionals and enhancing clinical research capabilities.

Fujitsu and IBM Japan plan to leverage their AI solutions to improve hospital operations and clinical support. This includes AI-powered tools for creating medical documents and streamlining operations such as diagnosis-related group coding for medical fee claims. The companies are also exploring ways to connect healthcare with drug discovery, aiming to improve clinical trial efficiency and patient suitability identification.

The collaboration will involve partnerships with medical institutions, including university hospitals and national centers, to validate and deploy use cases for healthcare data utilization and AI. Future plans include expanding integration with multiple medical information systems and developing patient-centric services.

Fujitsu's and IBM Japan's efforts align with the Japanese government's push for digital transformation in healthcare. By advancing data integration and AI utilization, the companies aim to improve the quality and efficiency of medical care, ultimately creating social value and addressing structural challenges in the healthcare industry.
