Fujitsu Limited and Chugoku Electric Power Transmission & Distribution Co., Inc. have entered into an intellectual property licensing agreement effective April 15, 2026. The agreement focuses on leveraging Chugoku Electric Power T&D's dynamic line rating technology and maintenance-related intellectual property to enhance power grid operations.
The collaboration aims to support renewable energy expansion and improve power transmission facility maintenance using drones. Fujitsu will utilize Chugoku Electric Power T&D's technology to launch an advanced service for power transmission and distribution companies, enabling safer and more efficient integration of renewable energy into the power grid.
As renewable energy adoption grows, transmission and distribution companies face challenges in maximizing existing power infrastructure while maintaining system stability. Dynamic line rating technology, which adjusts transmission capacity based on real-time conditions, offers a solution to optimize transmission capacity and facility usage.
Traditional maintenance operations relying on human labor are becoming unsustainable due to workforce reductions. Digital technologies and drones are being adopted to assess transmission facilities efficiently. Fujitsu's technology, utilizing optical fiber sensing, data management, and AI, has been tested since September 2021 to address these challenges.
The new service integrates Chugoku Electric Power T&D's expertise with Fujitsu's technologies to calculate transmission capacity in real-time using vibration data from optical fibers and environmental data. AI is employed to predict future conditions, facilitating advanced maintenance operations and reducing reliance on human-dependent methods.
Fujitsu plans to enhance the service with generative AI to further improve maintenance operations, aiming to accelerate the digitalization of power infrastructure globally. Chugoku Electric Power T&D will continue to advance its technology to support renewable energy and maintenance operations.
