JCB Co., Ltd. and Resona Holdings, Inc. have announced a pioneering project to commercialize ultra-wideband (UWB) payments, aiming to transform the purchasing experience through advanced UWB communication technology. Set to begin in 2026, this initiative marks the world's first full-scale effort to apply and commercialize UWB payments.
The companies plan to collaborate with multiple technology partners and merchants to demonstrate the technology and develop value-added solutions. The project aims to launch small-scale commercial operations in 2027, with full-scale commercialization expected by 2028. JCB and Resona are working within the FiRa Consortium to standardize UWB communication technology and create new payment experiences.
UWB technology offers precise device location and high-speed data communication, already in use for applications like digital keys and indoor navigation. The technology is poised to enhance payment systems, particularly in Japan, where smartphones with UWB capabilities are prevalent. The project seeks to leverage Japan's diverse cashless payment landscape to address user and merchant needs.
UWB payments promise to improve the purchasing experience by enabling hands-free transactions, even with smartphones in pockets or bags. The technology could also automate communication of customer preferences, such as dietary restrictions, and enhance store operations through personalized marketing and customer service solutions.
JCB and Resona initiated their strategic partnership in 2024 with the “Hands-free Payment” project, exploring device-to-device communication for seamless transactions. The companies have developed a UWB-enabled app for iPhones and Apple Watches, and plan to conduct proof-of-concept initiatives with partners in 2026.
The FiRa Consortium supports the development of UWB technology through technical specifications and certification, aiming to transform interactions with precise location awareness. JCB and Resona's project aligns with these goals, seeking to redefine payment solutions and customer experiences in Japan and beyond.
