Fujitsu and Osaka University Collaborate on Digital Transformation in Sports

Fujitsu Limited has entered into a comprehensive collaboration with Osaka University of Health and Sport Sciences (OUHS) to drive digital transformation in the sports performance field. The partnership aims to create social value and develop human resources by leveraging advanced technology, including skeleton recognition AI.

The collaboration will focus on fostering top athletes across various sports, such as gymnastics, and exploring new applications for AI technology. OUHS has launched the DX/AX (AI Transformation) Promotion Project to integrate digital technology and artificial intelligence into its educational and research initiatives as part of its Vision 2031.

Fujitsu's skeleton recognition AI, developed for its gymnastics judging support system, will be utilized by OUHS's gymnastics club. This AI system digitizes human movement in 3D, allowing for data-driven training methods that aim to improve athletic performance and develop elite athletes.

The initiative addresses the traditional reliance on subjective evaluation in sports by providing quantifiable metrics and real-time digitization of athletes' movements. This approach supports the enhancement of athletic abilities through precise, data-driven insights.

Beyond enhancing sports performance, the collaboration seeks to apply this technology in sports science and biomechanics education at OUHS. This will help cultivate human resources skilled in utilizing and researching advanced AI technologies.

Fujitsu and OUHS also plan to explore virtual sports initiatives. By employing skeleton recognition AI, they aim to offer accessible and safe sports experiences for young people and seniors, encouraging exercise habits and expanding the sports population.

Furthermore, the partnership will address regional health issues, such as promoting exercise habits among children and the elderly, by integrating OUHS's regional programs with Fujitsu's AI technologies.

This collaboration is part of Fujitsu's Uvance initiative, which focuses on addressing societal challenges through innovative solutions. By working with Uvance Partners like OUHS, Fujitsu aims to advance talent development, enhance sports performance, and promote societal well-being.
