Toyota to Launch New RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid in Japan

Toyota Motor Corporation announced the upcoming launch of its new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) in Japan, set for March 9, 2026. The new model aims to cater to diverse customer lifestyles while maintaining the SUV's robust design.

The latest RAV4 PHEV builds on the success of the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) model released in December 2025. It enhances the vehicle's off-road capabilities and introduces a power supply system that allows for extensive outdoor electricity use. The PHEV model features a large-capacity drive battery and high-output charger compatibility, significantly increasing its BEV-mode driving range.

The RAV4 PHEV's new-generation hybrid system boasts an output of 242kW (329 PS), delivering a powerful driving experience with improved energy efficiency. The BEV-mode driving range has been extended to approximately 150 km on a full charge, thanks to the increased battery capacity and the use of silicon carbide semiconductors to reduce power loss.

In addition to driving, the RAV4 PHEV can serve as a power source for household appliances outdoors. It includes a vehicle power connector for a 100V external power socket, providing up to 1,500W. In emergencies, the vehicle can supply electricity for up to seven days using its HV Power Supply Mode.

The GR SPORT model has been added to the RAV4 lineup, offering a sporty style with enhanced performance. It incorporates GR Performance Dampers and GR Braces to improve stability and handling, along with a specially tuned suspension for optimal driving performance.

The new RAV4 models will be available in various styles, including the Z (PHEV/HEV), Adventure (HEV), and GR SPORT (PHEV), with a base sales volume target of 700 units per month in Japan. Toyota continues to support carbon neutrality through its multi-pathway approach, offering diverse powertrain options to customers worldwide.

Toyota's initiative aligns with its broader goals of achieving zero negative environmental impact and adding value beyond this objective. The company remains committed to developing innovative and sustainable mobility solutions, contributing to a safer and more inclusive society.
