Toyota Motor Corporation unveiled its latest battery electric vehicle (BEV), a three-row SUV model of the Highlander, during a premiere event in Ojai, California, on February 10 PST. This launch marks a significant expansion of Toyota's BEV lineup in North America.
The new Highlander BEV represents a crucial step in Toyota's strategy to achieve carbon neutrality, complementing its diverse portfolio of electrified vehicles. The vehicle is set to hit North American markets in late 2026, with production slated to occur at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky.
As a part of Toyota's multi-pathway approach to reducing carbon emissions, the Highlander BEV joins an existing line of BEVs, including the bZ4X, TOYOTA C-HR, and bZ Woodland. The new model aims to cater to diverse customer needs across regions, and it offers advanced powertrain systems for effective performance and sustainable driving.
The Highlander SUV has been a favored choice among families since its U.S. debut in 2001, selling over 3.6 million units. The introduction of a BEV variant aims to enhance the model’s appeal and sustainability in alignment with Toyota's environmental goals.
The Highlander BEV features a lithium-ion battery with two capacity options: a 76.96 kWh version for city driving and a 95.82 kWh option for long-range travels. The vehicle offers both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, meeting varied customer preferences.
A key feature of the 95.82 kWh battery setup includes enhanced cruising range, targeting up to 320 miles in all-wheel drive mode. The model also incorporates battery preconditioning to optimize charging efficiency, especially under cold conditions, with the goal of achieving rapid charging within 30 minutes.
Toyota's commitment to carbon neutrality is underscored by its efforts to meet regional customer needs through various technological advancements. This includes the development of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
Looking forward, Toyota remains steadfast in its mission to create vehicles that not only meet consumer demands but also contribute to a sustainable and improved environment. The company’s initiatives reflect its dedication to advancing its product line responsibly while addressing global environmental challenges.
