Tokyo Metropolitan University to Launch Faculty of Global Innovation and Development

Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) announced plans to establish the Faculty of Global Innovation and Development in April 2028, a program designed to merge the humanities and sciences with an international focus. The faculty will be situated at the Minami-Osawa Campus in Tokyo and aims to admit approximately 75 students, with a mix of domestic and international enrollees.

This new faculty is part of TMU's mission to enhance its role as a global knowledge hub. The curriculum will feature classes in English, with a focus on fostering social innovators equipped to tackle sustainable urban and global challenges. The proposed faculty will offer specialized fields of study, including regional society, international politics, development economics, urban science, and ecological conservation.

The Faculty of Global Innovation and Development will emphasize cross-cultural collaboration and an integrated curriculum that spans liberal arts and sciences. Students will engage in a range of courses covering topics such as philosophy, ethics, historical perspectives, and contemporary social issues. Additionally, Japanese language courses will be tailored to international students' specific needs, and remedial mathematics education will be adjusted according to individual skill levels.

Corporate internships and domestic study abroad opportunities are also part of the program, providing practical experience to international students. TMU plans to open admissions twice a year, in the spring and fall, to accommodate a diverse student body eager to engage in this innovative educational path.

The candidate profile for prospective students highlights traits such as motivation to tackle global challenges, advanced English proficiency, and a willingness to embrace diverse cultural values. The selection process aims to identify individuals who can approach global issues from multiple perspectives and who possess an international outlook.

International student selection will involve online entrance examinations, with further details available in the university's overview document for the upcoming academic year.

In addition to the new faculty, TMU is set to introduce the English-Taught Degree Programs (T-GLIPs) in April 2027. These programs will be initiated in the Faculty of Urban Environmental Science and are part of a broader strategy to promote university-wide internationalization.

TMU anticipates providing secure housing for international students and financial support for those who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements, thereby reinforcing the university's commitment to nurturing globally competent professionals.
