Rohm Co., Ltd. has announced the development of the RS7P200BM, a 100V power MOSFET which boasts an industry-leading safe operating area (SOA) performance. This MOSFET is encapsulated in a compact 5060-size (5.0mm x 6.0mm) package making it an optimal choice for hot-swap circuits in AI servers that use 48V power supplies and for industrial equipment power supplies that require battery protection.
Due to an increased demand for stable operation and improved power efficiency in servers equipped with generative AI and high-performance GPUs, there is a pressing need for power MOSFETs with wide SOA tolerance. These transistors can safely handle inrush current and overload conditions, ensuring stable operation. Additionally, within data centers and AI servers, there is a trend towards using 48V power supplies to enhance power conversion efficiency. This trend is driven by the push for energy conservation and necessitates the creation of high-voltage, high-efficiency power supply circuits.
In response to these market needs, Rohm has added to its lineup of 100V power MOSFETs. The new RS7P200BM is packaged in a DFN5060-8S (5060-size) package, allowing for higher density mounting compared to the RY7P250BM, available in a DFN8080-8S package.
The RS7P200BM achieves low on-resistance (RDS(on)) of 4.0milliohm under operating conditions of VGS=10V, ID=50A, Ta=25C, while maintaining a wide SOA. Specifically, the SOA is 7.5A at a pulse width of 10ms and 25A at 1ms when operating at VDS=48V. This product offers a balance of low on-resistance and wide SOA, typically a trade-off relationship, which lowers heat generation during operation, improving power supply efficiency, reducing cooling load, and decreasing electricity costs.
Rohm is dedicated to enhancing its offering of power devices for 48V power supply systems. Its aim is to contribute to the reduction of power loss and cooling loads in data centers as well as helping to improve the reliability and energy efficiency of server systems.
Potential applications for the product include 48V system AI servers, data center power hot-swap circuits, 48V system industrial equipment power supplies like forklifts, power tools, robots, fan motors, etc., battery-powered industrial equipment like automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and UPS, emergency power systems (battery backup units).
