Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (MHIEC), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has finalized the reconstruction of the East Waste-to-Energy Plant in Toishimachi, Nagasaki City. The project, initiated under a contract with the Nagasaki Municipal Government in 2022, marks a significant upgrade due to the aging of the previous facility. The plant has been operational since June 16.
Under a Design, Build, Operate (DBO) contract, Nagasaki Higashi Eco-Creation Co., Ltd., a Special Purpose Company (SPC) with investment from MHIEC and MHI Group's Jukan Operation Co., Ltd., will manage the plant's operations and maintenance for 20 years. The plant features two stoker-type incinerators, each with a processing capacity of 105 tons per day, totaling 210 tons per day. The facility also includes equipment delivering a power generating capacity of 4,940 kW through steam turbine power generation.
The energy generated from waste processing will be utilized for high-efficiency power generation and to supply high-temperature water to the nearby Nagasaki Higashi Park Community Facility. This initiative aligns with Nagasaki's goal of becoming a zero carbon city by maximizing energy use.
MHIEC took over MHI's waste treatment plant business in 2008, acquiring technological development capabilities in environmental systems and expertise in constructing and operating waste management facilities both domestically and internationally. The company is positioned to offer comprehensive solutions from construction to operation, leveraging its extensive experience.
Moving forward, MHIEC plans to continue making proactive proposals aimed at extending the life of existing waste treatment facilities, addressing global warming, and reducing lifecycle costs, including maintenance and management expenses. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to contribute to energy decarbonization through waste energy collection.
